Government plans to make Desi GPS rival NavIC mandatory in smartphones

The Indian government plans to make it mandatory for 5G phones in India to integrate the local navigation satellite system, NavIC, developed by ISRO. The Pro models of iPhone 15 series already support NavIC technology, marking the first integration of the made-in-India GPS alternative by Apple. The government aims to include NavIC support in navigation systems of mobile phones, 5G-enabled devices, and automobiles. However, device manufacturers have raised concerns about possible increases in manufacturing costs. The government plans to incentivize brands to include the NavIC system.
